What can I best edit – and differentiate – in a Performance Task?

  • Can I add content or directions?
  • Can I delete any of the content?
  • Can I change either content or directions?

Quick Editing of Performance Tasks is Easy!

Differentiation of a Performance Task is first accomplished by using the levels within a Performance Task, but there are times when we want to edit content.  Heck, we know we did it all the time to meet the needs of our students and we wanted to give all teachers the same options.

For easy reading and reference, we’re going to give you the steps for adding, changing, and deleting content separately in this post, as well a quick reason or scenario when you may want to use editing.

Adding Content to a Performance Task

Let’s say your students need a bit more practice with a particular problem type and you would like to add more practice to a performance task, or you want to edit the Finale options after they complete the first levels of the Performance Task.  Here are your steps:

  • Go to your My Lessons library
  • Open the Performance Task you would like to edit.
  • Click the Editing button in the upper right corner – from red off to green on.
  • Navigate to the page you want to edit.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the Add a New Item button.

The new item options for are:

  • Text Block: just that a box where text, such as directions, can be entered.
  • Question (Math): choose text, multiple-choice, or number pad answer formats.
  • Question (ELA): choose text, multiple-choice, highlight, underline, edit text answer options.
  • Table: choose rows and columns to begin, but all can be edited later within the table.
  • Media: insert an image or video here easily.

Once completed, be sure to click the Save button on the upper left to ensure your last changes were saved. Re-share the lesson with students if the changes were made after you shared it.

Changing and Deleting Content in a Performance Task

You know that your students won’t have time to complete a task and you want to shorten it. You can open the Performance Task and delete individual items or edit them to be a bit less rigorous or more rigorous as needed.  Here are your steps:

  • Go to your My Lessons library
  • Open the Performance Task you would like to edit.
  • Click the Editing button in the upper right corner – from red off to green on.
  • Navigate to the page you want to edit.
  • Each question will appear as a box and tools will be presented depending on where you click.
  • General editing tools are found at the bottom of the screen.
  • Selecting the answer box for a math problem will bring the number pad.  Use it to enter the problem’s new answer to ensure correct auto-grading.
  • Select the gear on the left for additional editing choices, including changing the order of questions and adding icons.
  • Re-share the lesson with students if the changes were made after you shared it.

As always, please reach out if you have any questions. We want this to be YOUR teaching tool!
